Terry Riley IN C Irish

Carsten Pieper After many different versions of the ever-changing, ever-evolving minimal music classic, including a Chinese and an African/Malian rendition, we hereby get an Irish one! I really am no expert for this piece, but imho this is an excellent match. 7 players on traditional instruments that have been granted some freedom by Master Riley himself, infusing a special flavour, Irish, if course.
The download comes in HD quality and in an additional binaural version, too. Favorite track: Terry Riley IN C Irish (Binaural Version for Headphones).

5 Star Review of IN C Irish in Songlines Magazine

"But the two blend here with hypnotic, intoxicating immediacy in this thrilling live recording. Hosted in Dundalk in 2023 by Louth Contemporary Music Society, steadfast champions of making cross-genre, trans-global connections and Ireland's best-kept musical secret, it's a wondrous exercise in musical miscegenation. It is as trippy and mesmeric as Riley intended.

the joyous all-Irish traditional instruments version of Terry Riley’s In C on Louth Contemporary Music Series,
Steve Smith. For the Record

This new ‘translation’ of In C is an appealing and engaging listen, due to the tremendous commitment and skill of the players in realising Riley’s (and Quinn’s) vision, and serves as a further example of how malleable Riley’s score is to different performance traditions.

"Being involved in this performance of Terry Riley's "In C" was one of the highlights of my musical career. Being part of Terry's infinitely variable construct was both challenging and exhilarating; a unique artistic event. Another Eamonn Quinn Bullseye!"
Dónal Lunny

“A brilliant experience but totally out of all our comfort zones.”
Zoë Conway

“Playing Terry Riley’s In C was a unique highlight of my musical career,a truly challenging and rewarding experience.”

Recorded in St Nicholas Church of Ireland, Dundalk, on 17 June 2023. Recording funded by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Create Louth.

The latest release from Louth Contemporary Music Society, Ireland’s most dynamic promoter of new music, features a recording of the world premiere of In C Irish, a new version of Terry Riley’s In C for an ensemble of traditional Irish musicians.

Louth Contemporary Music Society’s artistic director Eamonn Quinn says, “Working with Terry Riley for his Irish debut back in 2007, when we premiered his specially-commissioned Ancient-Giant-Nude-Hairy-Warriors Racing Down The Slopes Of Battle, was a personal highlight for me. I am delighted that he agreed to a new version of his best-known work, In C, and made himself available to talk about it with the musicians, most of whom were dealing with a concert of notated music for the first time. The result is one of my favourite recordings. I was thrilled that Terry facilitated the players’ interest in improvisation and allowed them introduce traditional Irish tunes into the work.” The recording and mixing were done by David Stalling. It was then mastered at the Emil Berliner Studio in Berlin. It is available in a range of audio qualities, 24-bit/96 kHz high resolution, 16-bit/44 kHz CD quality, as well in a binaural version for headphone listening, and also in surround-sound Dolby Atmos.

The recording will appeal to anyone interested in new music and/or traditional music, as well as listeners wanting to explore a presentation of a 1960s, avant-garde classic in a composer-approved version where the whole soundworld is that of traditional Irish instruments.

The ground-breaking performance was led by fiddler Zoë Conway, with Dónal Lunny (bouzouki), Paddy Glackin (fiddle), Máirtín O’Connor (accordion), Mick O’Brien (uilleann pipes), Louise Mulcahy (flute) and Michelle Mulcahy (Irish harp).

about

Louth Contemporary Music Society Dundalk, Ireland

I would say the Louth CMS is particularly significant because of the dedication, love and devotion that drives Eamonn Quinn to seek out special musicians to bring to his corner of the world. These choices are made on musical worth regardless of their commercial potential. It is these kind of risks that keep music alive. Composer – Terry Riley ... more
